“One man, one engine” meets industry 4.0—connected by Virtimo.
Mercedes-AMG GmbH consistently follows the “One Man, One Engine” concept within its engine manufacturing facility—a philosophy ensuring that each high-performance engine is built from start to finish by a single person. The aim was to preserve this quality paradigm while transitioning into the modern Industry 4.0 era through automated production processes.
To meet the necessary IT requirements, we implemented a central communication platform in 2018, complete with workflows and technical support, based on INUBIT, the integration layer of the Virtimo Digitalization Suite.
IoT for AMG: Smart communication, seamless production processes, maximum quality.
The integration of internal systems for inventory management, order picking, and tracking [e.g., SAP], along with a wide range of operational technology [OT] devices, posed the biggest challenge.
A key issue: harmonizing data streams from various systems and OT tools, such as smart Wi-Fi screwdrivers, autonomous transport systems [for moving goods baskets], and the pick-by-light system [paperless order picking processes].
From the very beginning, INUBIT played a central role as an integration layer in the complex IT landscape of AMG’s high-class engine manufacturing. As a smart data hub, INUBIT centralizes IT communication flows, enabling full transparency across all production lines, automating process control, and enhancing monitoring efficiency.
Standardization, simplification of communication, easier integration of additional IT systems into the existing production landscape, and increasing demands for quality control—this is exactly where we come in with INUBIT.

Focus on Reliability: Production at AMG never stops!
“As a workflow engine, INUBIT offers exceptional flexibility, excellent traceability, and maximum availability. It allows processes to be visually represented, transparently tracked, and seamlessly documented. Additionally, AMG gains the ability to live-monitor the entire production control and identify at a glance where issues may arise—all while operations are running,” explains Benjamin Dörr [Consulting | Virtimo AG], highlighting the advantages of the central communication platform.
In addition, AMG can rely on a three-tier IT support structure to keep the entire IT behind production operations running around the clock. On-site, an external service provider handles production IT support. The in-house AMG IT team is highly trained and familiar with INUBIT. For intensive challenges, such as migrating to a new software version, or complex new requirements or problems, AMG can always rely on the expertise of Virtimo.
“Adjustments and maintenance are initially only made at a test and integration level. If everything runs smoothly there, the changes will then be implemented into production without impacting functionality. The focus is always on reliability and high performance,” adds Dirk Breitkreuz [Board Member | Virtimo AG].

Manufacturing Excellence: Successful collaboration with outstanding results.
Using the Virtimo software solution has contributed significantly to Mercedes-AMG being awarded the Factory of the Year industry prize in 2019. Additionally, in case of emergency, the internal IT experts can now immediately identify where action is needed to keep production running at all times, thanks to transparent monitoring.
The subsequent implementation of new systems or OT devices is no longer an issue either, thanks to clearly defined interfaces [test system, integration system, and production system] as well as Active/Active clusters.
AMG is set to fully harness the power of the Virtimo Digitalization Suite.
Currently, AMG is using INUBIT for two production lines. A third line is only partially integrated at the moment; here, INUBIT will be used much more extensively in the future.
The success of the collaboration up to this point is further demonstrated by AMG’s recent decision to incorporate additional components of the Virtimo Digitalization Suite, such as BPC and VIMON. AMG expects this to provide even more opportunities for transparent process and performance monitoring, more effective alerting, and improved traceability—centralized for all servers, including INUBIT.
