The Federal Network Agency [BNetzA] is getting serious about national market transparency. Starting January 1, 2027, the HEDWIG project is set to consolidate the publication of operational data on a central platform. What may sound like a distant future already requires strategic IT infrastructure decisions today.
Admittedly, the name HEDWIG first made us think of the famous snowy owl. However, it actually represents a tangible project with far-reaching consequences for several market roles: the establishment of efficient data collection and publication through integrated governance.
What is changing under § 111g EnWG?
The BNetzA’s goal is a seamless, highly standardized transparency platform. Rather than having market data scattered decentrally, as it has been so far, the path now leads consistently toward a central consolidation in the BNetzA Data Hub. Nearly everyone who moves or stores energy is affected:
- Electricity: Transmission system operators [TSOs] provide grid loads and feed-in forecasts.
- Gas + LNG: Transmission system operators [TSOs] and facility operators [LSOs] report physical flows and capacities.
- Hydrogen: The future is already being considered today – H2 is fully integrated.
The challenge: Complexity at the touch of a button.
HEDWIG demands data not only more frequently but also more precisely. Whether it is 15-minute intervals, the seamless data lifecycle – i.e., the continuous refinement of estimates into final time series – or the protection of trade secrets: these requirements must be securely mapped through technology. Anyone relying on manual processes here will quickly lose track of things.
VIPUSH:Smarter hub for automated HEDWIG reporting.
Even though the BNetzA has not yet finalized all details, one thing is already clear: automation is the way forward. To ensure that everything runs smoothly for our clients on 01/01/2027, we are making VIPUSH [Virtimo Publication Service Hub] HEDWIG-ready! Through the addition of a new module, we manage the entire processing of the reporting chain:
- Automated connectivity: Data is retrieved directly from your backend systems.
- Intelligent validation: Plausibility checks prevent incorrect reports before they reach the BNetzA Data Hub.
- Legally compliant + flexible: We manage the entire lifecycle of your reports and handle the labeling of sensitive data.
